Three Nights in Bangkok

We arrived at our hotel in Bangkok at close to midnight- it was Karis' birthday the next day - the plan was to get up have a birthday breakfast and then go out and explore Bangkok, problem was none of us woke up until 1:00 in the afternoon! So we had a Birthday lunch, swam in the pool and then in the evening went out and explored Khao San Road markets, - we decided to take the local bus which ended up being lots of fun with locals both helping and laughing at us - we got there! We wandered the markets and had dinner from the street sellers (and a cheeseburger for Jack!) and then had a tuk tuk ride back to the hotel. The next day we went to the temple of Wat Arun, had a look at the Grand Palace, and after a swim, went to the MBK mall- a collosus of a consumerist temple selling all sorts of stuff- somewhat overwhelming. After trying to find a bus stop for the local bus back to the hotel,and with very tired kids, we gave up and had another tuk tuk ride!

On Tuesday, we travelled to Whitby. It's a town with a few links to NZ and to the Ayling family. Darren's dad was evacuated to Whitby during World War Two, and his great uncle, Les Simpson, owned a butchery on the old cobbled lane that leads to the famous 199 steps up to the abbey. We managed to find the butchers shop- it still has Simpsons written on tiles on the street frontage. The shop is being gutted at present to become a gallery and the builder let us in to have a look- you can still see the rails where the butchers hooks were hung, the tiles on the wall; and out the back the remains of the staircase that lead up to the apartment upstairs- one of my early memories is helping my great uncle wrap some sausages for a customer when I was a wee lad.  Whitby's link to NZ is that it was home to Captain Cook, and memorabilia is all around the town - including a replica of the Endeavour that looks convincing from a distance but when you get close up you realise st the "p...

Ready to go!

We are all set- alarms went off at 3:40 this morning. Debbie delivered us to the airport and we are all checked in and waiting to board. All very excited 😀 and hopefully able to get some more sleep on the plane.

We’ve had a good day in Sydney-wandered around the opera house, the rocks area, walking the harbour bridge, lunch at the pancake house and then back to the airport- good to stretch our legs before the long flights ahead.
